Warding Against the Dying Light

Hear me without hesitancy: the day withdraws,
The day withdraws to its grave
That by each hour fading was prepared
And none that I could to save
Having left alone each moment uncared;
As if to seize and hold life fights the immortal laws
Of space where I ward against the dying light
Within the breadth of my numbered years.

Know me without duplicity: the eve remains,
The eve remains as it was that once before
With mingled light and dark in color'd repose
That you once did cheer and laughingly adore,
Where fear now in each smile and laugh thus shows
Me that the light is dying and what I hoped to gain
Is lost to the shadows that release the night
And the darkness that yet slumbers near.
